After Quinrose’s past success, there comes one of its most known classics: Alice in Heartland (Heart no kuni no Alice), based on Lewis Caroll’s children psychological novel of “Alice in Wonderland“. Originally released in 2007 and re-made in 2010 with improved art, CGs, better gameplay and extra scenes under the name of “Anniversary no kuni no Alice – Wonderful Wonder World” , now in 2014 it was finally brought to our iOS and Android devices by artmove.inc, completely translated into ENGLISH. Those already familiar with the game, manga or anime movie, can now finally enjoy it while taking the role of the always sarcastic Alice, pulled in a world she did not wish for and trying to pursue one of the 9 routes available: The White Rabbit, the Knave of Hearts, The Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter, March Hare, Tweedledee&Tweedledum, Cheshire Cat, The Duchess (Marquis in this case) and the Clockmaker (representation of Time in the Alice in Wonderland reality). Differently from the PC version though, it seems you aren’t given the 10th unlockable character route, which would be Nightmare. I’m not really sure what’s up with him, or if he’ll get unlocked later as you play, or if his route will be considered one of the BAD ENDs. In the Windows game, you could only get NIghtmare’s end after you completed Julius’s end and also you couldn’t get Julius till you completed Ace’s route.
Unfortunately, from what I’ve been playing till now, I can say there is little to no gameplay in this version while on the original version you were getting a certain number of timezone changes where you could visit the characters pertinent to the route you were planning to follow and only by visiting the right people and unlocking certain friendship events you were able to 100% complete a character’s route. This was something that got a lot of people confused and frustrated, but from my point of view it was something charming and it gave you a sense of challenge. I’m sad to notice that nowadays there aren’t many otome games giving much of a challenging gameplay and it all comes to reading text and choosing the choices you want to make at determinated times. Someetimes, they don’t even give you the possibility to try your luck and see if you actually manage to get the character you’re after, you can already directly choose his route from the start and I’m a bit disappointed to see Alice in Heartland iOS/Android version took this sort of path too. They somehow tried to maintain it by letting you choose, sometimes, who you want to visit even if rarely and by doing that you are still able to unlock certain friendship events, so I can only guess it was, maybe, a problem dealing with the porting of the game to iOS and Android that “forced” them to shorten the game and take out most of the gameplay and half CGs. But that also sacrificed the amount of entertainment and the game can sometimes get boring, mostly when you get involved in nonstop 10 minutes long talk events with NPCs you don’t even care about that are there only to show you what this world is all about, but it takes too much of the necessary time. In the Windows version you could somehow get by that problem because of the “breaks” the gameplay gave you.
Translation wise….eeh…If I knew Japanese I’d offer myself to translate it for free, because their translation sucks. I feel like they inserted the text in Google Translate, re-ordered some words and inserted their own EnGRIsh knowledge. The game already has lots and I mean LOTS of text, but because it’s so badly translated that you need double the focus to be able to understand it, it only becomes a lot more difficult to play.
Above, I posted a picture of the prices, as you can see you can get the voiced or not-voiced packs which is pretty good if you don’t care about the Japanese dubs, but I personally recommend you to get the voiced version because it’s really very good and I feel like you can get a better idea of what the characters are made of if you hear them, so to speak and it can actually be a nice distraction from the horrible Engrish translation. I especially need to praise Takehito Koyasu, who was in charge of Julius, he managed to make him less boring that what you’d expect him to be, and technically made Julius one of my most favorite characters. xD Then there’s Tomokazu Sugita in charge of Nightmare which didn’t really stay out of the spotlight if you ask me, I wouldn’t skip the text in Nightmare Events for nothing in the world ❤ and finally there are two of the dubbers that you might recognize if you watch subbed anime, Noriaki Sugiyama and Fukuyama Jun, Boris and the Bloody Twins respectively. Sugiyama really surprised me because if you think of his most famous dub (Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto), you wouldn't expect his voice to sound THAT catish and sexy playful-like, while Fukuyama is already the master of voice acting, going from low tones like Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass to childish comical relief like Aidou Hanabusa from Vampire Knight.
Anyway, before buying anything I recommend you play the Prologue and first episode to see if this game is for you or not and if you can bear the English translation, as you can see they are free.
Despite complaining on a lot of stuff, I ended up buying the complete voiced version only because I’m an old fan of the game and right now I’m working on Boris’ walkthrough, while trying to make something out of how the hell I’m supposed to get the friendship events that involve him or the jealousy events in this version. xD So expect me to take a while while I explore it throughoutly xD PEACE till then! ❤
