[First Impressions] Under the Moon [R18]

Ah…I’m definitely playing too many stuff.

First of all, Under the Moon is a 18+ otome game so you’ll have some hentai scenes in it. I personally don’t mind hentai. So those that mind it, well, I don’t remember there being a version that skips sex scenes so I imagine this game won’t be something you’d like. XD
*coughs* Let’s get to business…

Summary: You play as Princess Ashe, the daughter of the Demon Lord. Your dad’s about to die, and you’re not powerful enough a demon to take over as Demon Queen, so you instead venture out of your castle, together with your winged talkative black cat guardian, Kyle, in search for the new Demon Lord candidate. Upon stepping out however, the two Demon Lord candidates, Leni and Seizh, are uninterested in the position. What’s worse is that upon stepping out the boundaries of your castle, you’ve lost all your powers. (*sigh* and this is just for making you powerless xD this smells like rape!). Now, you are forced to live with the two candidates, and attend the same school they do until you manage to force them/one of them to come back with you to the Demon Castle.

More or less, the plot goes as stated above. Of course, Leni and Seizh aren’t the only “capture-able” characters in this game, but Kyle (who can actually transform into a semi-human – semi-cat demon), Sena (the always cheerful classmate of yours and *coughs* PLOTTWIST), Mr. ???/later called Zero/ and a secret character called Unan are also “capture-able”.
Now, this game seems to have 6 different endings for each guy which is a lot. These 6 different endings are divided into 3 endings for the Pure Love route and 3 other endings for the Love&Hate Route.
What are Pure Love and Love&hate routes? From what I happened to experience, in the Pure Love route, the respective guy loves you and only you in an innocent and pure way (…with some exceptions…erm..not gonns spoil), while in the Love&Hate route the respective guy “loves” you but prefers treating you as a kind of sex… slave… *coughs*?

The bad thing about this is that the game is in Japanese only (safe for the demo which I think got an English patch), BUT the good thing, for maybe some of you, is that the game is FULLY voiced. Even YOU have a voice! YES! So let’s throw our hands up in the air and scream “YAAAY” to that!

My first impression on the characters was fairly good. I like their design. They kind of lack originality though. The males are stereotypical images of the silent, unsociable main male leader (Leni), the always smiling and gentle looking guy (and I accentuate “kind LOOKING”) (Seizh), the innocent, clumsy guy (Kyle), the sportive, flamboyant, always cheerful, flirty male classmate (*cries*)(Sena), the mysterious guy (Mr. ???) and the secret character (Unan).

The protagonist, Princess Ashe, or the “you” in the game, is the typical moe lolita that you love and hate at the same time. I personally like her innocence and naiveté and I strongly think she really is one of the cutest lolitas I have ever seen, but I really dislike when she starts being a masochist and as dull as a chicken. (And I apologize to chickens…). One can be cute and attractive without being dumb too, thank you.

About Sugar-Beans, the developer of this game, I can’t say much. Under the Moon is the first otome game from this company that I played and I didn’t even finish the game just yet so I can’t say much else as a first impression. I also know these guys are behind Ijiwaru MyMaster which is another +18 title that got quite the hype some years ago.

Good thing that I must note is that they put a great deal of effort in their CGs to make it look as shiny and beautiful as they should be. Thumbs up to that!… Besides the heroine’s boobs getting smaller and bigger depending of the situation lol.

Till now, this game made me raise lots of eyebrows and I went a lot like “wtf am I playing?”s and “why.” and “omg”s at some parts, so if you want to play it, be careful in what you put yourself into. That’s everything that I can say right now, but I will get into more details once I’ve finished the multitude of endings this game has! XD

  1. Hmm interesting! I’ve never played an R18 game and right now don’t think I would, but maybe that will change. The art sure looks pretty but I don;’t like how the heroine is left powerless in her situation. She is adorable as you said! How difficult would you say the Japanese is? I was able to tackle some of Reine Des Fleurs, but a lot of it admittedly went over my head.

    • The problem with most hentai otome games (or hentai games in general) is exactly that they like to put the heroine in a powerless position, similarly to Diabolik Lovers or Black Wolves Saga to a certain degree. It’s that type of aggressive play/fetish going around with some exceptions, of course. I can confidently say that they’re not for everybody. I also cringe at some of it, but I was curious…

The Japanese is not very difficult. The story is not really THAT complex or getting over one’s head either; I wouldn’t understand a lot if there wasn’t any voiceover though; I picked this game exactly because I knew the heroine also has a voice so it was easier for me to connect the kana to the sound especially when it comes to kanji. It might work for you too. I think I forgot to mention that this is a PC game though. (Good old time when otome games were released on PC only XD) I bought it a long time ago but I knew nothing of Japanese back then, so now I dusted it off and tried again.
